The
Australian Landcare Council is the Australian
Government's peak advisory
body on landcare and matters concerning natural resource management. It
has a major role in advising the Government on priorities and strategies
for natural resource management to achieve efficient, sustainable and
equitable management of natural resources in Australia that are consistent
with the principles of ecologically sustainable development.
Council usually meets four times each
year, alternating between Canberra and a selected State or Territory
region. When meetings are held outside Canberra, field trips are held in
conjunction with the meetings to enable members to meet landholders and
gain a wider first-hand experience of natural resource management issues.
Members are
appointed to the Australian Landcare Council on a part-time basis by the
Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. Council currently
comprises a Chairman, eleven community members and eight members nominated
by other relevant organisations. Under
the
Natural Resources Management
(Financial Assistance) Act
1992,
members (apart from the Chairman) are appointed for periods not exceeding
three years. The Chairman holds office for an indefinite period at the
discretion of the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.
